Christie’s Auction House of New York reported the upcoming auction of the Princie Diamond, a 34.65 fancy intense pink cushion cut diamond. The Princie Diamond is at auction for the first time in 50 years and is expected to bring in an estimated $30 to $40 million.
The Princie Diamond originated from South Central India in the ancient diamond mines of Golconda. The stone initially belonged to the Royal Family of Hyderabad, ruler of one of the wealthiest provinces of the Mughal Empire.
In 1960, the diamond was purchased by the London branch of Van Cleef & Arpels for £46,000 and was named at a party at its Paris location in honor of 14-year-old Prince of Baroda, who attended the party with his mother Maharani Sita Devi.
According to Christie’s, the Gemological Institute of America designated the diamond as a type IIa diamond which is considered to be the most chemically pure type of diamond with exceptional optical transparency.
Francois Curiel, the chairman of Christie’s Jewelry Department remarked, “One of the largest and finest pink diamonds in the world, the Princie Diamond carries a fabulous provenance which brings together the legendary names of Golconda, Nizam of Hyderabad, and the Maharani Sita Devi of Baroda. This rich history, combined with its rare pink hue, conveys a special charm, which will speak to all collectors in the world seeking the best of the best in gemstones.”

It has been reported that Chrisite’s in Geneva will auction off a 101.73 carat D-flawless pear shaped diamond. Taking 21 months to polish, this diamond comes from a 236 carat rough. This pear shaped diamond is one of the largest in existence and the largest D-flawless diamond ever put up for sale.
The Gemological Institute of America reports that this pear shaped diamond is also an ultra-rare Type IIa, which makes up less than 2 percent of the world’s diamond production. Coupled with the reputation of Christie’s, the stone is expected to be sold for approximately $20 – $30 million with its already growing interest by private collectors and members of the trade.
